The Government of Belize along with the European Union on Wednesday inaugurated the electrification of seven villages in southern Belize. The four point seven million dollars project was completed through a grant from the European Union and the Government of Belize contributing one point two million dollars. The villages of Santa Cruz, Cowpen, Monkey River, San Isidro, Bladen, Trio and San Pablo will soon be connected to the national grid through this project. Present at the symbolic “switching on” was the Minister of Economic Development, Erwin Contreras, Stann Creek West area representative Melvin Hulse, BEL’s President Lynn Young and EU representative Marco Mazzochi Alemanni who expressed satisfaction in the project and hopes that the lives of those in the community will improve tremendously. Minister Contreras also ensured his government’s commitment to provide electricity to every household in the country. The villagers will now have to get professional electricians to assist in the completion of the direct electricity connection to their homes. ![]()
