Michael Preston: Midas Resort Belize
Saturday, 22 August 2009 00:00

Midas FamilyWho are you and where are you coming from?

My name is Michael Preston, Born in Germany and raised in Bournemouth England. Last place living in the UK was Mansfield Nottingham.

What is your activity right now?

Managing Midas Resort in San Ignacio Belize Central America.

Tell us why you choose to move to Belize?

My parents to moved to Belize in 1990 and opened Midas Resort in 1991 and they built six round Cottages and this was in a time when tourism was just begun in Belize. I was working for a law firm in England for 2 years and I came to Belize for a month vacation and my family showed me all the beautiful things that Belize has to offer and I fell in love just like my parents and came back to Belize about 3 months later with all my gear and made ago of it. At first it took a while to adjust because everything takes too long to do example shopping, restaurants, and appointments which was very hard to adjust but after a month you adjust as nothing happens today but always day after tomorrow apart from the food of course. But this little country has a lot of charm, people are so friendly and welcoming.

How long have you been in Belize?

I’ve been in Belize now a little under four happy wonderful years.

What do you miss the most, if anything?

I miss the pubs most of all. For us Brits there are three stores called broadies 2 located in Belize City and one in Belmopan where you can purchase some favorites like bisto gravy yummm so we can still make an English Roast. Belize has about five channels only for football so we can still keep in touch with local footy and if there is anything that you can’t find here you can always have a family member post in the mail some stuff like HP Brown sauce PG Tips so its really hard to miss things other than the local Pub.

Did Belize brings you any surprises? Which ones?

Adjusting to currency as at first like every country that you go to you always think coohhhhh that’s cheap but in reality if you took the currency difference off Belize would be as expensive as the UK on imported goods especially but what country isn’t but for being in a town that has just over 15,000 friendly people not bad for the small inconveniences and the all the tropical fruit that you can get its makes up for it.

Any advices to give to the readers?

If you are thinking of living in Belize deciding on destination is pretty difficult so be sure to spend about a week to two weeks in each destination and try living as a local that way you will know whether or not you have made the right choice. If you are thinking of bringing a vehicle make sure you get a pickup truck as you only pay 12% duty compared to SUV’s which is nearly as high as 50%
